The GEF is not formally linked to the Montreal Protocol but actively support its implementation. The GEF helps the countries with economies in transition to phase out their use of ozone-destroying chemicals under the terms of the Montreal Protocol. GEF support has moved from separate Chemicals Focal Areas (ODS and Persistent Organic Pollutants) to having one, fully integrated Chemicals and Waste Focal Area, including POPs, Mercury, ODS, and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management.

Rotterdam Convention on Prior Informed Consent

Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants
The Stockholm Convention is a global treaty to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants (POPs). POPs are chemicals that remain intact in the environment for long periods, become widely distributed geographically and are toxic to humans and wildlife. Collaboration was established within the framework of the international ODS and POPs initiative.

Ozone Secretariat
The Ozone Secretariat is the Secretariat for the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and for the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Based at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) offices in Nairobi (Kenya), the Secretariat functions in accordance with Article 7 of the Vienna Convention and Article 12 of the Montreal Protocol.
